The newest addition to luxury hospitality in downtown Los Angeles has arrived! On Friday, June 23, 2017 InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown hosted its Grand Opening Party. More than eight hundred guests, including city and state officials, dignitaries, business leaders, influencers and tastemakers all enjoyed a first look at this groundbreaking new property. The hotel is the tallest building west of Chicago with 73 stories rising 1,100 feet above street level.

Go “Behind the Scenes” for a look at some of the details involved in planning and executing an event this grand. Featured in this film are Krystal Moreno, Director of Social Catering and Amy Funke, Director of Marketing and Communication at InterContinental Hotel Los Angeles Downtown along with David Merrell, CEO & Creative Director of AOO Events.

This event was years in the making and the vision combined with the planning, staffing, entertaining, feeding and documenting this event took many hours of coordination by some of the most gifted people in the event industry.

At 1,100 feet and the tallest building west of the Chicago, the L.A. skyscraper is hard to miss.
With a sweeping roofline, it stands out by day among the flat tops of its tall rivals and at night is illuminated with an ever-changing colored light show.

Changing the Los Angeles skyline and framed by Korean Airline’s logo is the 73-story building that houses the InterContinental Hotel, several floors of office space and five restaurants.

Yang-Ho Cho who heads Korea’s Hanjin Group, Korean Airlines largest shareholder, celebrated the grand opening of the skyscraper with parties and a show of the building’s dancing LED lights visible for miles. “The Wilshire Grand is a new tent pole for Los Angeles,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti a few days before it opened.

The InterContinental has 889 rooms. Guests check in on the 70th floor, in front of floor-to-ceiling windows where blocks of the city can be seen far below. There is a 24-hour cafe and a French steakhouse on the 71st floor. The curved glass top reflects the shape of one of California’s most famous rock formations, Half Dome in Yosemite.
